If I am completely honest, I feel like life is filled with so much. In our day with iPhones, internet, T.V., movies, games, hobbies etc. it can be so easy to get lost in the abyss of the 21st century. What I have realized in my life is that I have subconsciously tried to get out of those good things what I believe they were never meant to offer me: total satisfaction. Why do I do that? Do you do this? I have loved too much and lived for things that have left me empty in regard to experiencing true meaning in life. This leads to a deeper question: What can satisfy my soul? Because clearly if I am experiencing a sort of emptiness that needs to be quenched, I’m looking for satisfaction, like a man in a desert who needs water for his thirst to be quenched. But I am asking the question of what can quench life itself? I see in me that I am looking for something that can quench the deepest desires I have. And if I may ask you, what do you believe can lead you to say to yourself: That is it, that is what I was looking for, that is what I was meant to love and live for in my life. What’s the answer?Again, what are we looking to quench? I would say the answer is life itself. So let’s think through this logically. Can the answer be sports? Can it be friends, books, coffee, or other good things? These can provide a type of satisfaction, but I don’t believe they can provide total satisfaction. But why? Because in my mind, if I want everything I am to be quenched, the most logical answer has to be whatever is above me, or above life itself, or before life itself. If there is something or someone before life, that must be at least considered to be the answer. In regard to that, we have to look briefly at how everything came into existence. I believe creation is too complex to believe in evolution, and there has to be a first cause, thus I believe in intelligent design. And this Designer or Creator has the highest authority to share what created beings are made for because he made us. He existed before human life came into existence, just like the creator of the Toyota car dealership existed before the dealership existed. The Bible can help us here as we move forward. John 1:3 says, “All things were made through him (Jesus), and without him was not any thing made that was made.” So, John is saying the one who existed before anything existed was Jesus. Later in the gospel of John, John also says, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30-31).
So, in those verses we find that John is speaking to people who are already biologically alive, yet he’s implying by saying, “by believing you may have life” that they are missing out on a different type of life. So, in other words, John’s found it! John is saying he has the answer to life itself! To those who do not believe in Jesus, believe and you will receive life as it’s been meant to be lived. This is the answer you’ve been looking for, but you may not have known it. You might say, believe what, that he exists? No, believe that he has died on the cross and rose from the dead for the forgiveness of your sins. So, you’re calling me a sinner? Yes, but I am to. If you believe in God, and if you don’t believe you need a Savior, then logically you will just try to earn your way to right standing with God through your own performance, and I have good news for you. 1) You don’t have to do that, and 2) You can’t do that. Jesus died for your sin because he knew apart from his sacrifice, you couldn’t stand before God and be accepted. What I mean by believing is accept his free offer to forgive you for all your sin by dying on the cross for you, as well as the gift of crediting his perfectly righteous life to you. The second you do that, the Creator of life itself comes into (quite literally) your life. You can experience living in life the way you were always meant to. You will have “life in his name” (John 20:31). And for the believers out there, focus your life on loving Jesus and living for him. Make that the cornerstone of your existence. That is the only answer to living life with joy and satisfaction. Placing anything else or anyone else as the cornerstone will never lead to your thirst for satisfaction being quenched. You have been given life in Jesus’ name, exercise the life you’ve been given by walking with him closely every day, and truly loving him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Come once again to the waters of Jesus that will never leave you dry.
