A Summary of Sanctification

SanctificationRead 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Question: In verse 2 the word sanctified is used, which is past tense, meaning this has already happened. But in verse 8 Paul says that Jesus will “sustain you to the end, guiltless…” Implying that in the end (final glorification when Christ returns) is when we will be guiltless. So which is it? Are we sanctified now fully? Or are we being sanctified day by day until we pass from this life to eternity?Answer: We are sanctified in principle fully, but sanctified in practice partially. Here’s what I mean:

Hebrews 10:14 “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”

This is what Paul means! You are perfected for all time in principle beyond the shadow of a doubt, but this principle is working itself out in your life by the Holy Spirit’s power through practice day by day until you pass from here to eternity.

Soli Deo Gloria
