The Local Church

Church pew
“For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ…” Colossians 2:1-2

One truth to grab hold of in this Text is that when believers are knit together in love, more assurance of knowing Christ is the result.Do you see it in the Text? Look at the word “to” in verse 2. Take the words before the to, and connect them with the words after. I’ll paraphrase: When believers are knit together in love, they are encouraged because what this leads to is all the riches of full assurance of knowing Christ.

Do we really believe this though? You may say, I thought we get to know Christ through private devotions. And you are right, we do. But knowing Christ is not limited to private interaction with Christ, it also involves public interaction with other believers, and specifically in this passage Paul is referring to being knit together to your local church body. Are you?

So, if you truly value above all else to know God, (which you should as a Believer in God) then you will also value highly your local church because when you are knit together with your local church, your assurance that you know Christ (and the riches of it) will grow but if you are not knit together in love with your local church, you will fall away from your assurance that you know Christ. I did not say fall away from knowing Christ, I said the assurance of knowing him, which is nearly just as bad.

Application:
1. Get knit together in love with a faithful church body.
2. How? By becoming more than a cloth that hangs out by yourself. Knit the cloth of who you are and your life in the warm blanket of the body of Christ.
